A few years ago some friends of mine visited Nashville and while they were there they posted several photos in front of the cutest wing mural. This was before Mankato’s ‘mural scene’ had exploded like it has recently. I thought to myself Mankato NEEDS wings of its own! Not long after that, beautiful murals by local artists started popping up around the city.
One of the newest murals is ‘The Wings of Whimsy’ mural in Old Town on the side of Whimsy and Weathered at 523 N. Riverfront Drive. These beautiful pink wings were inspired by store owners, Jes Tano and Denise Rients and painted by local artist Michael Cimino (who has had a hand in many of the amazing murals pictured below). My favorite part of this brand new mural is not only is there a set of lovely wings there’s a smaller set next to them for your littles! A few members of our Mankato Moms Blog team along with our daughters teamed up with Whimsy & Weathered, Bumbelou and Vivian Rose Boutique for an amazing photoshoot! Here are a few of our faves:
The little girls didn’t get to have all the fun! The moms were styled by Vivian Rose Boutique in the Historic Union Train Depot in Mankato. Safe to say we all felt pretty special. But, don’t worry, you don’t have to get all dressed up to enjoy Mankato’s beautiful murals! We asked other moms on our team to share photos of their favorites around town:
You cand find the colorful mural pictured on top on the side of the Bellisimo Paint building also in Old Town Mankato on Riverfront Drive. Pictured on the bottom is one of the city’s newer murals, the loon on the side of the NaKato restaurant on Belgrade Ave in Lower North Mankato.
This beauty is also recently completed by artist Kelly Murphy, it’s located on the side of Frost Plaza on Riverfront Drive (home of the Wooden Spoon bakery), make sure you stop in for a treat to refuel from your mural tour!
Our contributor, Molly, is always on the pulse of everything local. I knew she’d have some great mural pics to share. She didn’t disappoint. You may recognize the floodwall mural below as well as another view of the Bellissimo mural and the ‘Seeds of Old Town’ mural which is located on North Riverfront Drive between Rock and Elm Streets.
We can’t talk about murals without mentioning the Silo Art project which will be the newest and largest project to date and is expected to begin late this summer.
These beautiful images have been so much fun to share with you. Mankato’s public art is abundant including the City Art Walking Sculpture Tour and Art On The Go. It’s all so accessible and free for families and visitors to our community. We hope that you and your family will take a chance to enjoy the work of these talented artists helping to beautify our community!
How about a few more wings pics before we go?
