There’s nothing quite like fall in Southern Minnesota! Crunchy leaves, bonfires, pumpkin-flavored everything and so many fun events for families! The 5th Annual Harvest Festival is happening October 1st-20th at the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota. You don’t want to miss this 3-week celebration of everything fall! Your whole family will make memories while learning about harvest and fall traditions. There’s something for kids of all ages including the toddler straw maze, the opportunity to play with corn and soybeans and lots of special events!
Here’s a breakdown of what’s happening this month:
Saturday, October 5th
9 am to 4 pm: Explore tractors and other implements that are used on farms! This event is in the alley between the museum and the parking lot.
9 am to 2 pm: Minnesota State Southern Agricultural Center of Excellence will have their simulated grain bin exhibit. Learn how to be safe around grain bins and what happens if someone needs help in a grain bin.
10 am to 11 am: Owls in Minnesota. Did you know there are TWELVE species of owls in Minnesota? Scott Kudelka, Minneopa Area Naturalist will be at the museum to share his wealth of knowledge about these amazing birds! Hear owl sounds, view feathers, talons and taxidermied exhibits!
Sunday, October 6
1 pm – 3 pm: Find out how the Watonwan County 4-H team can help a superhero save the planet! They will demonstrate their purple champion ribbon machine! There will also be exhibits from local 4-H clubs in the museum dor National 4-H week October 6th through 12th.
Saturday, October 12
10 am – 12 pm: Harvest Foods! This weekend is all about making food: bread, butter, cider and more! Knead dough, sprinkle dried herbs grown at the Museum on it, then bake bread with Bentley McGowan Wagomobile. Amy Kyllo, the 66th Princess Kay of the Milky Way, will be at the Museum, making butter with visitors.
1 pm – 3 pm: Cider Making with the Haggerty Family
Sunday, October 13
10 am – 2 pm: Food Preservation with Under the Sun Herbs. Come see dried herbs and teas and learn about the ways you could use them in your cooking.
MEA Weekend :: Thursday, October 17
12:30 – 3:30 pm: Ag Afternoon with Midwest Dairy, Minnesota Soil Health Coalition, Minnesota Pork, Minnesota Turkey, and Alltech
6 – 8 pm: Harvest Hoedown – a variety of harvest-themed activities, including Square Dance (6:30 – 7:30 pm), Chicken Poop Bingo, and harvest food tasting
Friday, October 18
9:30 – 10:30 am: Pets & Vets with Minnesota Valley Pet Hospital: dog wellness check-up (with a real dog!). Bring your stuffed animals for a check-up, too.
9:30 – 10:30 am: Reading nook with therapy dogs, Louie and Niko.
Saturday, October 19
Old-fashioned Fun & Games: Pumpkin ring toss, egg & spoon, pumpkin tic tac toe, potato sack races, stilts, walking boards, and more.
Sunday, October 20
1 pm: Pet EXPO visit: come see amphibians and reptiles!
