Come One, Come All and Come Hungry to Eat the Fare at the Fair

“Come hungry” is the one suggestion to earnestly follow in anticipation of the #greatMNblogtogether.  Although the fairgrounds were officially closed for fair preparation, more than a dozen bloggers from around the state were welcomed in to gather for an exclusive taste of new fare offered at this  year’s great Minnesota get-together.  I was one of the “lucky duck” bloggers {as referred to by a handful of friends} to be in the room for the event.

Sure, the goal of the fair is to feature all things Minnesota and that means traditional food favorites like cheese curds, roasted sweet corn and of course Sweet Martha’s Cookies.  A trip to the state fair wouldn’t be complete without eating AT LEAST one delicious albeit a bit zany food item found on a stick.  Did you know that of the more than 500 foods offered at the state fair, 80+ are served on a stick? Two new items that fall into this category are Cherry Bombs and Swine & Spuds

There are also the quirky food combinations everyone is eager to see and taste.  Me, not so much. Stepping outside my food comfort zone doesn’t happen too often.  However I knew that this event was geared toward sampling new food at the fair so I vowed to try everything that was placed in front of me that day, not really knowing what it was before I took my first bite to avoid pre-judging any particular item. I was pleasantly surprised!  Of the new foods sampled my favorite was Pizzarito by Green Mill.  The crispy flour tortilla filled with meaty Italian goodness is perfect for dipping with the side of marinara.  Also making a debut on the menu this year is Sweet Corn Blueberry Eclair, Brown Ale and Onion-Gouda Tipsy Pie, Italian Bomba Sandwich and Mobster’s Caviar.  It wasn’t new to the fair menu but the Beer Gelato seemed to gather the most buzz among us bloggers.  Yes, you read it correctly…BEER GELATO.

Sweet Corn Blueberry Eclair Kernza flour eclair filled with sweet corn pastry cream and topped with blueberry glaze.

Beer Gelato

Pizzarito Flour tortilla filled with pepperoni, Italian sausage, risotto, mozzarella and marinara, coated with garlic butter, parmesan and italian spices, baked and served with a side of marinara.

There are more than 30 foods that will make their debut at this Minnesota State Fair this year.  Check out the entire list here. No surprise that the portion sizes are plenty big.  Needless to say I left that fairgrounds feeling satisfied yet ready to come back for more.
