Unpopular Opinion: I Hate Online Shopping

In the wake of the recent Amazon Prime Day, I’ve come to the realization that I must be the only person who does not shop online. I’ve also been wondering, what exactly is Amazon Prime Day? And for that matter, what is Amazon Prime? How is it different than regular Amazon? What is cyber Monday and why is it such a big deal? And most importantly, am I missing something?

Not my Cup of Tea

I have never been a big online shopper. I could probably count on one hand the number of times I shop online in one year. It’s just not my thing. I see all the memes on social media about Amazon, all the late-night shopping, drunk shopping, hiding all the boxes… and I can’t relate.

Call me crazy but I actually like to go to stores and physically do the shopping myself. With pants on, with a bra on, out in public. I’m not really a stay at home kind of person. I like to be out and about doing things out of the house. Don’t get me wrong, I do love lazy days at home also! But I would rather go to the store to see what I’m buying vs. picking something out online. Odds are if you have something I like or want and you tell me you got a great deal for it online, I will never end up buying it unless I can find it in a store.

Staying Local

I love shopping local and supporting small businesses. This past Christmas while everyone else was getting the best deals online, I was checking out all the local shops. I made a vow over the past holiday season to buy all Christmas gifts locally or secondhand, so that’s what I did! Personally, I would rather spend a bit more to be able to purchase the perfect item from a local merchant.

The Convenience

Obviously one of the biggest plusses for online shopping is the convenience. A click of a button in your own home and voila! Two days later the item magically appears on your doorstep. What could be easier than that? I will admit the few times I do order something online I get excited seeing it at my front door. It’s like Christmas! For young families, online grocery shopping and curbside store pickup are clearly growing in popularity. We’re busy, convenience is key! I’m sure if I actually gave these options a shot I would be pulled over to the dark side. But… for now, I’ll pass.

I’m sure the noise I just heard was all of your jaws dropping to the floor as you came across this post. That’s ok. I know I’m the minority here. As more and more stores are closing their doors, I’m guessing online shopping may be one of the few or only options for making purchases. But we’ll cross that bridge when we get there. For now, I’ll continue my old school ways and try to figure out what Amazon Prime means.
